Mind of Matter:
Crafting Gothic Tradition in
The Haunting of Hill House
UCLA Honors Research
OVERVIEW
This revised honors research paper was developed through UCLA’s English 199 Independent Studies program (honors credit), guided by a faculty advisor with a formal proposal, syllabus, and research plan approved by the English Department.
It examines how the Gothic tradition evolves across authors and mediums, revealing a connection between the mind and its environment — often expressed through structures that house hauntings. The paper traces the genre’s inheritance patterns and introduces a new critical concept, the Gothic Paradox, to deepen readers’ understanding of Gothic storytelling.
This work demonstrates my ability to produce research-driven, long-form critical writing with original insight.
